Think where man's glory most begins and ends --
and say my glory was I had such friends.

-- William Butler Yeats, "The Municipal Gallery Revisited"

His talent was as natural as the pattern that was made
by the dust on a butterfly's wings. At one time he understood it
no more than the butterfly did... Later he became conscious
of his wings...and he learned to think and could not fly
anymore because the love of flight was gone.

-- Ernest Hemingway,
A Moveable Feast

FOREWARD
Rizzoli Memorial Tribute Book

This book is a collection of thoughts, remembrances, poetry and art dedicated to the memory of Stephen Case. The many who have so generously contributed their time and effort toward the completion of this project counted Steve a dear friend, husband, son or brother. The contributor list given at the end of this volume should not be taken as comprehensive of those whose life Steve touched or of those whom he held dear; it is but a partial list, in this respect, and represents only those who have joined us to reflect on the loss of a loved one.

BIOGRAPHY
Rizzoli Memorial Tribute Book

Stephen Thomas Case was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 7, 1966. He lived most of his early life in Westchester County, New York. Graduating from Hendrick Hudson High School in 1985, he went on to achieve academic and professional success in several fields. He earned a BA in Architecture at Princeton University in 1989, an MA in Architecture at Yale University in 1993, and an MBA at Cornell University in 2000. Among many honors, Steve was awarded a Fullbright Fellowship for research, at the University of Technology in Helsinki, Finland, on the architectural sculpture of Eliel Saarinen, Armas Lindgren, and Hermann Gesellius in the context of the National Romantic movement in Finland. He was a founding partner of Churchill Livingstone Interactive Publications in San Mateo, California where he worked as senior designer during the years of 1994-1997. In 2002 he came to Rizzoli, where he labored assiduously and with passion as senior editor of architecture and design until his death on February 18, 2004.
